Ashlands — Lands of Orunthys

a Reach · four lands · levels 98–110

Ashlands

A land that burned so long that ash became soil. Glass instead of sand, masks instead of faces, and the forge in which the world was made.

Lands

The Ashlands are the Reach of heat: a strike here cuts through defence, and roots, as Flora says, do not hold — only anger does. A waste, dunes, a city of masks and the Forge of the First. A campfire in this country is the only fire that warms instead of burning.

Ash Wastes (from level 98) — “Here ash falls instead of snow”. Embers and ash: heat cuts defense, worms take the blows. Found here: Wasteland Jackal, Coal Beetle, Ash Zombie, Smoldering Vulture, Smoke Imp, Charred Treant and Ash Worm. The pack is led by Ash Knight and Smoldering Golem; King of Ash waits in the lair. The people’s camp is the Campfire in the Cinders: errands are given there. Zola, the ash-gatherer, waits at the fire. Besides the three common errands, this campfire has a story of its own: “The Last Tree” (reach the last tree and see whether the sprout still lives), “Coal Beetles” (slay 8 Coal Beetles — they gnaw everything alive in the cinders).

Glass Dunes (from level 102) — “Sand that cuts”. Glass and venom: scorpions and serpents sting. Found here: Glass Scorpion, Dune Serpent, Obsidian Lizard, Sand Spirit, Mirage Wraith, Glass Crab and Sun Hawk. The pack is led by Dune Warden and Glass Colossus; Worm of the Red Sun waits in the lair. The people’s camp is the Dune Campfire: errands are given there. Rashid, the glass-cutter of the dunes, waits at the fire. Besides the three common errands, this campfire has a story of its own: “Glass Stingers” (slay 8 Glass Scorpions — they hold the road to the arch), “The Glass Arch” (stand beneath the Glass Arch and see where the fire came from).

City of Empty Masks (from level 106) — “The faces left, the masks stayed”. Masks and shadows: thieves are quick, gargoyles are sturdy. Found here: Mask Spider, Hollow Townsman, Stone Gargoyle, Sand Rat, Dancing Doll, Masquerade Hound and Shadow Thief. The pack is led by Faceless Priest and Stone Mask Guardian; Lord of a Thousand Masks waits in the lair. The people’s camp is the Campfire of Masks: errands are given there. Lia, the mask-maker, waits at the fire. Besides the three common errands, this campfire has a story of its own: “Taken Faces” (return the souls of three creatures of the City of Empty Masks — and their faces will return to them), “The Wall of Masks” (reach the wall of masks and find Lia's face).

Forge of the First (from level 110) — “The fire that forged the world”. Iron and lava: golems take the blows, the forge hits hard. Found here: Anvil Crab, Fire Apprentice, Clockwork Hound, Lava Salamander, Iron Raven, Slag Slug and Forge Golem. The pack is led by Forgemaster and Cast-Iron Warden; the First Smith waits in the lair. The people’s camp is the Forge Campfire: errands are given there. Brann, the last apprentice of the Forge, waits at the fire. Besides the three common errands, this campfire has a story of its own: “Brothers of Fire” (slay 6 Fire Apprentices — Brann's brothers of the workshop), “The First Anvil” (reach the First Anvil and look at the unfinished blade).

Chapter 5, “The Reaches”: each of the four campfires gives three errands — “The Approaches” (fell 15 creatures of the land), “Pack Leaders” and “Lord of the Land”. Whoever closes every errand of the Reach earns the title “Tamer of Ash”.

The Reach’s finale: after the last lord, at the Forge Campfire, the Keeper chooses how the story ends. “Stoke the Forge” — the forge works for people now: Brann forges ploughs, Rashid cuts glass, and traders walk the wastes again (battle gold in the Ashlands +15%, title “Who Stoked the Forge”); “Quench the First Fire” — the First Fire goes out. The ash cools, the masks fall from the wall, and a second sprout rises by the last tree (chance to return a soul in the Ashlands +8%, title “Who Cooled the Ash”). The choice is made once.
