a Reach · four lands · levels 130–142
Underdeep
Beneath the world the Blight grows like mycelium: quietly and everywhere at once. Grottoes, mines, the roots of the world and a lake where no one sees.
The Underdeep is the Reach of stone armour: creatures here take a blow better, and the spores of the grottoes poison. The campfires burn as the last light for many steps down, and the creatures flock to them like moths.
Fungal Grottoes (from level 130) — “Here the light grows out of the ground”. Spores and poison: mushrooms poison the whole party. Found here: Sporecap, Cave Moth, Fungal Goblin, Blind Worm, Firefly Swarm, Mycelium Hound and Cave Toad. The pack is led by Fungal Shaman and Great Sporebeast; Queen of the Mycelium waits in the lair. The people’s camp is the Mushroom Campfire: errands are given there. Pip, the mushroom-forager of the grottoes, waits at the fire. Besides the three common errands, this campfire has a story of its own: “The Mother Mushroom” (reach the Mother Mushroom and learn whom it is feeding on), “Spore-Sowers” (slay 8 Sporecaps — they sow the mycelium).
Crystal Mines (from level 134) — “The Blight has grown into the stone”. Crystals and armor: beetles are sturdy, scorpions sting. Found here: Crystal Mole, Mine Ghost, Amethyst Beetle, Minecart Golem, Cave Bat, Quartz Scorpion and Blighted Dwarf. The pack is led by Mine Foreman and Crystal Worm; Heart of Amethyst waits in the lair. The people’s camp is the Campfire in the Adit: errands are given there. Dora, the forewoman of the Crystal Mines, waits at the fire. Besides the three common errands, this campfire has a story of its own: “The Twelfth Shift” (return the souls of four creatures of the Crystal Mines — the people of Dora's shift), “The Abandoned Minecart” (reach the abandoned minecart and find the shift log).
Root Labyrinth (from level 138) — “The roots of the world lead down”. Roots and worms: thick, a war of attrition. Found here: Root Crawler, Giant Earthworm, Rootgnawer, Knot Spider, Blind Tracker, Thorned Root and Mud Golem. The pack is led by Keeper of Roots and Earth Devourer; the World Root waits in the lair. The people’s camp is the Campfire among the Roots: errands are given there. Vyaz, the root-weaver, waits at the fire. Besides the three common errands, this campfire has a story of its own: “Rootgnawers” (slay 6 Rootgnawers — they chew through the bearing roots), “The Heart of Roots” (reach the Heart of Roots and ask about the twelve).
Lake of the Blind (from level 142) — “No one sees here — and everyone hears”. Blind and pale: eels are quick, the drowned drag you down. Found here: Blind Fish, Cave Crab, Stalactite Imp, Pale Eel, Deep Salamander, Eyeless Bat and Drowned of the Lake. The pack is led by Blind Seeress and Lake Serpent; Lord of the Blind Depths waits in the lair. The people’s camp is the Campfire by the Water: errands are given there. Ola, the ferrywoman of the Lake of the Blind, waits at the fire. Besides the three common errands, this campfire has a story of its own: “The Stone Pier” (reach the stone pier and see what the shift left behind), “Pale Eels” (slay 6 Pale Eels — they drag Ola's boat to the bottom).
Chapter 5, “The Reaches”: each of the four campfires gives three errands — “The Approaches” (fell 15 creatures of the land), “Pack Leaders” and “Lord of the Land”. Whoever closes every errand of the Reach earns the title “Light of the Deep”.
The Reach’s finale: after the last lord, at the Campfire by the Water, the Keeper chooses how the story ends. “Ferry the Shift Across” — ola carries twelve lanterns to the far shore. The Twelfth Shift finally moves on — to where no light is needed (chance to return a soul in the Underdeep +8%, title “Guide of the Blind Lake”); “Light the Mine Lamps” — lights come on along the tunnels. Dora leads a shift into the mines again, Pip trades his mushrooms, and boats full of ore cross the lake (battle gold in the Underdeep +15%, title “Who Lit the Tunnels”). The choice is made once.
